Religious Education

Description

At the Cathedral, we believe our children need to know their Faith in order to live their Faith.  When they truly understand what our Faith is about, they want to go out into the world and spread the good news through words and deeds.  That is the goal of our Religious Education Program--we want our students to understand that following the teachings of the Catholic Church means they need to reach out to others.  In our classes, students are encouraged to participate in outreach programs.

Our program is very structured because we believe it is important that our children need to know the fundamental beliefs that make us Catholic.  In each grade students are required to master faith facts and prayers.

Curriculum:  The Church teaches that parents are the primary educators of their children and, as such, they are expected to support our program by praying with their child, listening to their prayers, listening to their lessons and attending Mass with them on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.  We use the We Believe textbooks published by William H. Sadlier.  These textbooks are approved by the Diocese of Joliet.  Below are the topics emphasized by the grade level.

  • Grade 1 - Jesus teaches about God’s love, Being followers of Jesus, Belonging to the Church
  • Grade 2 - Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist
  • Grade 3 - Christ and the Church
  • Grade 4 - The Commandments
  • Grade 5 - The Sacraments
  • Grade 6 - The Old and New Testament
  • Grade 7 - Discipleship
  • Grade 8 - Sacrament of Confirmation
